Technical Tasting Notes

2021 Koonunga Shiraz

This single block wine comes from the Ancestor Vine (older than 125 years) Becker block in Koonunga in the Northern Barossa Valley. The Becker’s farmed this block from 1893 through to 2020 when it transitioned to the Hoffmann’s of Ebenezer fame. The records suggest that the vines were old in 1893 but exact planting date is unknown, This wine takes full advantage of the once in a generation 2021 Vintage, it carries a richness and power that is unique to the Northern reaches of the Barossa Valley.

One of my favourites from what is shaping as one of the very best vintages of the past 50 years.

2022 Koonunga Shiraz

HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION (DAVE BROOKES)

94 Points - Sourced from the Becker Vineyard in Koonunga, way up in the north of the valley, now managed by Adrian Hoffmann. Pop your schnozz in the glass here, and it could be nothing but Barossa shiraz with deep, resonant macerated satsuma plum fruits, some blackberry pastille, hints of fruitcake, dark chocolate, olive tapenade, pan juices, licorice and earth. Excellent fruit depth, creamy oak and an impressive length of flavour and sense of latent power.

95 Points - Sourced from dry-grown 1870s ancestor vines, this Hayes Family Wines Koonunga Shiraz is a wine with incredible drive and presence. Oh, I could get very comfortable with this, and maybe I did. Note, the bottle pictured is indicative only. This sample is hot off the press and the official bottle pics have not been taken as yet. Substitute the blue band for a pink one that states Koonunga.  Exclusively available to select restaurants and at the cellar door, the old school approach has been maintained by keeping this in 25% new American for 16 months.

Baked raspberries and rhubarb scents are joyous and vivid with a delicious dense berry basket dive. The red fruit absolutely sings. It's hard not to love the shape and the spices that frame the fruit. Mulberries and blueberries build some fantastic momentum. Long, silky and incredibly moreish, super fine spices shimmer on a fabulously persistent finish. It's an excellent Shiraz that walks tall. Just beautiful.

Drink to ten years+

90 Points - A rich and deep ruby-red hue. Blueberry, vanilla and candied violets on the nose. Deep and plush blueberry compote, vanilla and dark chocolate notes fill the palate. It's rich and luscious with plush tannins gently guiding the line. Finishes softly, a little lacking in tension at the end but its velvety nature is easy to appreciate 14 FEB 2024
